Frequently Asked Questions

What is the optimal time frame for a 3D/4D ultrasound?
We can perform the 3D/4D ultrasound any time after your 20-week fetal assessment. The best time is between 24-29 weeks. During this time frame, the baby is still small enough to have room to move freely in the womb. After 29 weeks, the baby is more likely to have hands or feet covering the face.

Will you be able to tell me how much my baby weighs?
No. This ultrasound is an elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound. We will not evaluate any anatomy of your baby and we will not be able to determine weight. This ultrasound is purely for entertainment purposes to see your baby's face, arms, legs, etc. We can confirm gender on this day.

How many guests and family members can come with me?
Due to the size of our exam rooms, we ask that you limit the number of family members to two.

Can I have a 3D/4D ultrasound if I am pregnant with twins?
Yes, just keep in mind that oftentimes, one baby is covering the other baby making it difficult to obtain clear images of both babies. The best time frame for twin pregnancies is 24-26 weeks.

How long will my session take?
This session will take approximately 30 minutes. This includes 10-15 minutes of scan time and the remainder of the time to prepare your digital pictures.

Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, appointments are necessary.

What if I am running late?
Due to limited time slots, we ask that you arrive on time for your appointment. If you are more than 10 minutes late, you may be asked to reschedule.

Will my insurance cover a 3D/4D ultrasound?
No. Insurance will not cover an elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound. We will not file a claim for this ultrasound. You will need to pay when checking in.

Am I allowed to video or take pictures with my cellphone?
No. Due to clinic policy, we cannot allow you to take pictures or record with cellphones/video cameras. We will put all of your still images on a disc for you to take with you. You can print as many images as you like from this disc. They will be standard Jpeg images.

What if I am not satisfied with my images?
Our sonographers are highly trained to give the best images possible and will make every effort to obtain images that you are happy with. Please keep in mind that there are many factors that determine the quality of your images. Fetal position, the amount of amniotic fluid (water) around your baby, placenta position, and maternal body size all play a role in the quality of your images. While we can usually get your baby to move around a bit during the exam, the other factors are out of our control. We suggest you eat a snack before coming in for your ultrasound to ensure you baby is awake and active. If the sonographer determines that your baby is facing away from the probe, she may ask that you reschedule for a later date.
We cannot guarantee that your images will be similar to those you may see on the internet or even those from our clinic. We will do our best to ensure patient satisfaction, however we cannot offer refunds on these exams.

The exams are optional and are NOT covered by your insurance plan. Give us a call with any questions or to schedule your appointment. 731-422-4642

3D/4D Ultrasound FAQ

What is Four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound?
4D is the latest in ultrasound technology. 4D takes three-dimensional ultrasound images and adds the element of time to the process. This allows you to see your unborn baby in amazing real time detail.

What is the Optimal time for a 3D/4D ultrasound?
This depends on how you would like to see your baby. Between 24-29 weeks, babies have a more skeletal appearance with 4D, but you are able to see more of the baby at once. From 29-40 weeks babies are developing the fat layer that fills in their features so you will be able to see more facial detail at this time. 3D/4D imaging also depends greatly on the baby's position, size, movement and amount of amniotic fluid as well as the mothers size and weight, therefore we cannot guarantee image quality due to those factors.

Will you provide measurements of the baby or establish a due date?
No. This ultrasound is an optional non-diagnostic service and is only offered after you have received your 19-21 week fetal assessment. We will not be able to determine the weight of your baby nor will we establish or change your due date. This ultrasound is done solely for entertainment purposes and will not replace your fetal assessment.

Will you be able to determine gender?
Yes, we will be able to re-verify or check the gender of your baby if the baby is in a good position. As with the fetal assessment, gender is not 100% guaranteed.

How many people can I bring to view the ultrasound?
Due to the size of our exam rooms, we asked that you limit the number of people to 1.

What if I am not satisfied with my images?
We cannot guarantee that images will be similar to those you might have seen elsewhere or even from our imaging facility. Every baby scans differently depending on its gestational age, position, and amount of amniotic fluid. We will strive to get the best images possible. If the baby is sleeping or facing towards the mothers spine and we cannot obtain any images within the first few minutes of the ultrasound, we may ask that you reschedule at a later date at no charge to you.

Is 4D Ultrasound Safe?
Yes, ultrasound has been used for over 35 years and has been proven through countless studies to be a non-invasive tool with many benefits. We strictly adhere to the standard set by the FDA which restricts ultrasound exposure to levels that produce few, if any, effects on the fetus. Presently ultrasound is as safe as ever when performed by a highly trained and skilled sonographer and performed within a reasonable amount of time. Our exams are limited to 30 minute sessions with approximately 15-20 minutes dedicated to performing the ultrasound and allowing 10 minutes to prepare for and clean up after the exam.

Can I have the 3D/4D ultrasound if I am pregnant with twins or multiples?
Yes. Please inform us if you are pregnant with twins so that we can allow more time for your exam. You will need to schedule your appointment between 24-30 gestational weeks for the best imaging. Also, there is an additional $75 charge for multiples.

How long will the ultrasound take?
You will be scheduled for a 30-minute time slot. We do ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out any necessary paperwork.

What if I happen to be late?
We have a very limited number of appointments each day and do ask that you try to be on time for your appointment. If you are more than 10 minutes late you may be asked to reschedule so that we do not delay the appointments remaining.

Do I have to make an appointment?
Yes, appointments are necessary.

Will my insurance pay for my 3D/4D ultrasound?
NO. This ultrasound is an elective exam not covered by insurance. You will be required to pay prior to your ultrasound.

Am I allowed to bring a video / digital camera to the ultrasound?
No. We do not allow anyone to record or take pictures during the ultrasound. We will provide you with several digital pictures that we will send to your phone.
